Hi,

This might be a bit of topic, but hopefully of interest to the osg-users list.

Here's what we'd like to do: we'd like to contract a graphics designer to model/design several particle systems (or particle symbols, as we call them since they will be "self contained" and local particle systems not interacting with the world around them) to be used in our OSG based application.

My initial thought was to have the graphics artist create the particle system in a 3D content creation program (e.g. Maya or 3DS Max), export the particle system to Collada, and import the collada model in OSG. In theory this seems to be good approach as it would allow us to contract any graphics designer with decent 3D design skills.

While this type of production line works fairly well for solid models, it fails miserably for particle systems at several levels*. My question to the community is this: Are there any good tools out there for graphics designers to create particle systems intended for use in OSG? (googled, but at no avail.) Any thoughts or advice?

Best regards,
John

(*) The ColladaMaya plugin does not export particle system settings through the fcollada extension, but samples the particle systems. However, the osg-collada plugin does not support the sampling syntax. Furthermore, even if the export had been successful I suspect that we still would have to add fcollada extension support to osg-collada plugin...:(
