It all depends upon what you mean by "real-time generation of terrains" as this is so open ended it could mean many different things. osgTerrain builds it's geometry and state it uses for rendering from height fields and imagery, this is all done automatically for you. You can also control various parameters like sample density and vertical exaggeration at runtime via the osgTerrain::Terrain control node. osgTerrain also works well with paged databases, either ones that are created offline by the likes of VirtualPlanetBuilder, or on the fly by 3rd party NodeKits like osgEarth. Whether this answers your question I have no idea.
