You won't need a height map at all :-) The ray intersections that osgUtil::InteresectionVisitor/osgUtil::LineSegmentIntersector provide intersection information on the position and local normal of the surface as well as the node path to the geometry leaf being intersected. Have a look at the osgintersection and osgpick examples.
