I think it's partly a cultural thing - on mailng lists it's normal to use human names and rarely do you get daft and inhuman names used, while forums they abound. In the case go googlegroups if users have to have a google account to use the forum then it's likely they will end up with a more reasonable name. I would expect we'd still need to moderate it though - it just depends on how burdensome this might be. Even on the mailing list I and others still have to ask how to address users that just blurt out a bit of tex and don't sign it. In discussions with many participants being able to attach name to helps the human mind track the various threads of conversation, without it the community and communication ends up being a grey blurr. However, you can't catch stupid every time and we really do get quite a few questions that are answered with very basic view of the docs or a search on google. In these cases I try to guide the person to asking better questions or just point them to go an find the answer out in the appropriate place. One can turnaround poor communicators into being positive community members with a bit of nurturing, Cheers, Robert.
