std:string for one, that has been completely re-written, so if your passing
strings around different versions this normally gets you in to trouble
quite quick

there were many STL changes that are not binary compatible

Lets not even go near the folks who might be using .Not err I mean .Net

if your using an older C library you should be OK

One of the things we have had to do for some things is basically wrapped
some older C++ libs fully in a C wrappers, this gets you past some of the
issues but not the STL ones.

Here as sensor.com we been through this quite exhaustively and our
experience is DON'T mix, if you have the source I HIGHLY recommend you
rebuild in the same version your using.

Best Regards

Gordon

Mike -- You state that the 7.1 dependency binaries are incompatible with a
v8.0-built OSG; what experience or info is this based on?

I have been using the 7.1 prebuilt libTiff with the TIFF plugin built with
8.0; exercised it thoroughly and encountered no issues...
