Regards specifically the sub-thread on authorisation and space (@ Michael and Daniel),
I came across a magnificent quote the other day, about voting and the nature of democracy. Voting is little more nor less than the periodic delegation of our inherent authority - to act on our own behalf, and with others, as a citizen. By the standard perspective, the authority of elected representatives is 'there', and voting just influences who holds it. Not so... voting creates that authority, through delegation. Maybe this is old news, but it was a new perspective for me. So thinking about Open Space... the 'space' is not an ephemeral impersonal thing that holds authority, but a property of the collective, that a group has stepped in to. So in relation to your question Daniel, where does the authority of the space come from? From all those who are willing participants, who have delegated their own authority to collective (and perhaps a facilitator or host, as steward of the collective...). It seems very clear to me from this angle. I must be missing something. ; ) Cheers *John Baxter* *Cocreation Consultant & CoCreate Adelaide Facilitator* jsbaxter.com.au <http://www.jsbaxter.com.au/> | CoCreateADL.com 0405 447 829 | @jsbaxter_ <http://twitter.com/jsbaxter_> *Thank you to everyone who came, helped or spread the good word about City Grill!* *Summary and links: cocreateadl.com/localgov/grill-summary <http://cocreateadl.com/localgov/grill-summary>* On Thu, Nov 13, 2014 at 10:04 AM, Michael Herman via OSList < [email protected]> wrote: > always there, i think, daniel. and kind of like spiritual practice, or > any practice for that matter. we do the practice every day or whatever, > and some days we just rock. some days we sit on the cushion or run or sing > or whatever and we end up riding some kind of rocket to peak performance. > then we come back the next day and it's nowhere to be made or found. but > we sit or whatever anyway. if we keep doing the practice, the results show > up over time. people make suggestions and offerings like this all the > time, in lots of small ways, and some just catch fire. planned and > unplanned, intentional and accidental, official and spontaneous. it can > come from anyone, but only takes off if a sufficient slice of everyone > recognizes it. doesn't come from anywhere. always everywhere, often > unseen or unspoken. practice invites it, allows for it, but nothing can > *make* it happen. i think. > > > -- > > Michael Herman > Michael Herman Associates > 312-280-7838 (mobile) > > http://MichaelHerman.com > http://OpenSpaceWorld.org > > > On Wed, Nov 12, 2014 at 5:20 PM, Daniel Mezick via OSList < > [email protected]> wrote: > >> Harold says: >> "...The authority is in the space, just ready for some one to pick up." >> >> Where does it come from? >> >> BART Paper says: >> >> https://www.it.uu.se/edu/course/homepage/projektDV/ht09/BART_Green_Molenkamp.pdf >> " Nonetheless individuals take on roles that serve to fill the gaps of >> authority >> abandoned, yielded, or implicitly ceded to them* by the** organization >> or group. * >> >> >> >> >> On 11/12/14 6:13 PM, Harold Shinsato via OSList wrote: >> >> The authority is in the space, just ready for some one to pick up. >> >> >> -- >> >> Daniel Mezick, President >> >> New Technology Solutions Inc. >> >> (203) 915 7248 (cell) >> >> Bio <http://newtechusa.net/dan-mezick/>.
