On further experiment it appears that this problem relates to physically
placing the phone on the car dash. The movement of the car starts the
problem and the problem stops, or becomes less, the smoother the road or
when the car is standing still. Also, the exact orientation of the phone
may matter - the problem seems less when the plane of the phone is vertical
as opposed to leaning back at all; portrait or landscape orientation
doesn't seem to matter.

In order to view map details at high zoom (200ft or less) I have SafeMode
set. I think I saw somewhere that this impacts the calculations for the
accelerometer(?) or gyroscope or something. Will try a route w/out SafeMode
set asap.
