It sounds like you might be pressing the Go button before you're ready to 
navigate.  

If you are already displaying the GPX, press the directions button (the 
arrow in the diamond). You'll be prompted to use the GPX.  Pressing on the 
Distance/Time field will then give you stats about the route, including the 
distance and an altitude profile.

If you aren't initially displaying the GPX, you can select it via <gear 
icon>/GPX route. 

As noted elsewhere in this forum, following an imported route will give you 
turn-by-turn directions at each *turn *of the road*, *rather than at the 
appropriate intersections.
