I used to use a low-end Nuvi in the car, and have switched to using
osmand, even though I still have the nuvi (with osm via mkgmap)
someplace.

Relative to a Nuvi, negatives for OSMand are:

  - no way to get traffic data (or if so I don't understand how)

  - some goofy routing, due to wrong assumptions in osmand about how
    long things take. Specifically:

    * some issues where _link roads without an explicit speed get
treated at the default speed for that class, and usually you
can/shoudl only go half as fast on link roadsa[

    * really acute turns, like 160 degrees, are preferred compared to
stop signs, leading to route instructions that appear ridiculous
and would be frowned upon by the local police. But, these are
local artifacts and usually aren't too troublesome if you pay
      attention.

    * u-turns are not considered to take as long as they really would,
between slowing to flip and waiting for others, not to mention the
social unacceptability of them on many roads (perhaps partially a
      tagging issue).

I regularly see crazy routes due to the above, and have a bunch of
screenshots waiting for me to get around to trying to fix some of
    this.

  - some poeple talk about poor route calculation when driving hundreds
of km. (I rarely use it this way, so I'm unclear on how bad it is.)

The positives are:

  - ability to have really up-to-date data via osmlive (vs maps updated
on the 10th, so with plain osmand your data is from 10 to 40 days
old, unless you don't bother to update -- still very fresh)

  - much bigger screen with higher-resolution more-data rendering, and
it seems faster than the garmin for the same displayed detail level.
But I always display more and more detail because I can.

  - faster route calculation (with a modern phone, vs an old nuvi :-)

  - ability to load maps over wifi without messing with a USB cable

  - abiltiy to analyze a track in terms of speed/elevation right in the
    app

  - ability to customize rendering in the app, e.g. showing or not
showing osm fixme/note tags, showing or not showing surface,
    hiking routes, etc.

  - not having to have a second device, assuming you'd have your phone
anyway. But you really need external power for any length of time.

So, the real answer is that I could use either and choose to use osmand.
