When I said that the data is not so big, I meant the routing data.
Netherlands full map (March 2020) is 1.8GB. "Only" 125 MB of that is
routing data. The rest is addresses (628MB), POI data (63MB), some
transport data (10MB) and 1+ GB of map data.
For the roads_only map the numbers are the same, apart from the map data
which is only 55 MB (total obf size 709MB)
So in the these maps, the routing data is only 125 MB, which is 6~7% of the
full map. (Netherlands is one of the 4 countries with complete address
data. Hence the relatively large percentage)

I use OsmAnd for the exact same reason you do: because it has the most
complete and detailed maps. And that is how I use it on my phone for
walking and cycling.
For car navigation on my car head unit, I need all roads, POIs and
addresses. That's in the roads-only maps with the added benefit of (much)
better screen rendering performance and no additional "clutter" on the map
that only distracts, as map data to be displayed is only 5~6% of the full
map.

Exactly :).
I still use OsmAnd occasionally for car navigation as it has the best
gpx-routing and "make your own route with multiple waypoints"
functionality. Also for the latter an hc>1 is very beneficial.
Despite my comments and critics, I still consider OsmAnd the best,
complete, allround navigation app available (and why I participate quite
frequently in this mailing list). That's why I use OsmAnd with some
"improvements", which can now so easily be added. Those "extras" is what I
am promoting. I am not demoting OsmAnd as such, but I give arguments (with
some bias) why OsmAnds calculation is so slow. I am already many years
(11+) a big supporter of OsmAnd, but that doesn't mean I'm blind to its
shortcomings (or personal different view, if you prefer)

And indeed: for all other car navigation I almost completely switched to
Magic Earth, also because of the free traffic info.
But on the other hand: Because of the profiles now giving you the
flexibility in routing, I now also started to use OsmAnd more often again
for car navigation.
