Actually MIDI and software synthesizers was the reason why I originally started developing OSS about 16 years ago. It's still interesting area of "just for fun" development.
However it looks like there is no real demand for MIDI. There are about 100 Linux MIDI enthusiasts (who all use ALSA). That's all. Serious music business uses Win/Mac because these environments are two decades ahead of Linux in this area.
