Sorry, I don't think all things scale linearly - what might work when lying to your wife won't necessarily work on the world stage - the politics are in fact quite different. For that matter, your wife is likely not going to wait for an apology - the world can wait, the US isn't going to be forced to sleep on the sofa unless it does.
