Sounds like you just need to configure your network so that remote users can
access OTRS (think firewall/VPN/etc.).

That's no option. We have a firewall and VPN. That's just what we want to avoid.

I don't really understand what you want to avoid. If you already have a VPN setup then remote agents should be able to use that to access OTRS.
