Try looking in the System Folder for a folder names 'Servers' - .... Just trash the lot of them every now and again for at least some improvement.

I've had startup times in OS 9 on my beige of around ten minutes ever since I installed OS X on another volume, and designated my original OS 9 volume as my Classic environment system. I wondered if it had anything to do with OS X replacing all my OS 9 extensions with similar ones, except under "kind" it has "Classic environment xxxx" instead of the original name. The old ones are still there, just shunted to the "Disabled" folder.
My "Servers" folder is empty.
I wonder if the mysterious startup virus reported on PCI mac has been again turned loose. fluff
Startup virus? First I've heard of it. What's known about it?

You got it. Each Server in that folder is searched for on the network and the timeout time is at least 2 minutes- .... it's because people click the "Connect Automatically at Startup" checkbox when they are logging in to their other computer. Don't tick it- just use the alias for the mounted volume in your "Recent Servers" folder in the Apple Menu...
I'll try this next time I boot 9. However, wouldn't I have to have the other computer attached to be able to see the checkbox in the Chooser? Is there somewhere else I could go to get rid of it, say trashing the Chooser prefs?
