$25 isn't too terrible, and you can also buy the LCD to go with it. 
If you look at their datasheet, they are using a 2408, with 5 pins for
the LCD (4 data pins plus the D/C pin) and using the remaining 3 to
read pushbuttons.

However I haven't gotten much use from it yet because I didn't realize
at first that it requires a 4-bit interface and the LCDs I have lying
around are the 8-bit kind; you have to pay attention to it when buying
cheap surplus ones (BG Micro has some of both right now, I see.  Their
4-bit one unfortunately uses an EL backlight rather than LED.)

I was hoping I could drive a VFD with it, but none of those have a
4-bit interface AFAIK.  Maybe it would be possible to program a little
microcontroller to be a one-wire slave and drive the VFD, and that
approach could also be more efficient; but I doubt I will get around
to that.
