I've never seen a 44780-based LCD that didn't support 4-bit mode.  It's 
all in the initialization as to what bus width it uses, but it's been in 
the controller chip since day one as far as I know.  

I'd try to hack something together tonight, but I don't have any 2408s and I'm 
leaving 
for two weeks starting tomorrow after work.  So....  I've written a lot of 
44780 control code for a lot of different systems, so I remember most of 
the "gotchas" (and there aren't that many, but watch your instruction 
execution times, if you're not checking the busy flag!).  If whoever does 
try to make this work runs into any walls, feel free to drop me (or the 
list) an email with the problems and I'll see if I can help.
