it is (and shipping $$$), I can have such device for 2$ PCB, 3-4$ DS2480 and
LCD 0$ (I own it already)

http://www.krionix.net/mylcd.pdf It is my lcd, pdf looks cheap (those charts
and scaned images... lol)
but they say it does support 4bit mode!
Sets interface data length (DL), number of display lines (N) and character
font (F). And DL can be 0/1. Maybe they lie :)

EL looks nice, low power consumption but  that is not a good idea to use EL
ON all the time, they can work up to 1000h MTBF?
