I was incorrect in my earlier note about the polling frequency. The DS2408 has a latch, accessible through OWFS, that will save the button press. This will greatly diminish the chance of missing a button press and reduce the polling frequency.
I'm not sure the DS2408 will run without Vcc power. In any case, the button press draw on the data line would probably be an issue, so I think you will need a power line. This should be transparent to OWFS.
