I'm not an expert myself. I would use a optoisolator. Those are cheap and  
draw less power than a relay.

Here's one 4N33 it about $1 and you will need some resistors

Look at the page 4 on the left there is example of a circuit.
However the one thing I'm not sure if this particular one(4N33) would run  
5V on the detector side. If you have some local electronics shop I think  
they will give you one suitable for 5V.

Or maybe the 6N138 can be supplied with 5V on detector side.

I never used those but once built one optoisolator from a diode and  
phototransistor an put them in a black shrinktube. If your local shop does  
not have optoisolaotrs(optocouplers) the will certainly have a  
phototransisotr(which looks like a LED)
