Still confused about this.  I wondered if it may be a faulty adapter, so 
I bought a new one and it is the same.  I wondered if it may be some 
difference in the owfs version, but my main system and laptop are both 
running
./owfs version:
     2.9p0
libow version:
     2.9p0

They both use DS9490R USB adapter.  The main system allows you to open a 
'temperature' file and displays the temperature correctly, laptop gives 
the error

      The folder contents could not be displayed.
      Sorry, could not display all the contents of "temperature": Not a 
directory

Any ideas what could cause this?
