Not to open a can of worms (again), but I think the choice of platform is essential. And the question why we don’t use Github is justified at this point, just as it was back then when we discussed the move from KDE projects to Gitorious. (Back then the main argument was exposure and leveraging everyone already on Gitorious.) Git is decentralized already, so the platform mainly just needs to perform the tasks of exposure, usability and uptime: where Github is highly superior to Gitorious.
A more verbose explanation of why I changed my mind from being a Gitorious proponent to Github (adapted from a post of mine to the Unhosted mailing list, explaining why we use Github: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/unhosted/XF_b_mP-edw/ddLHK4oq-RAJ ) I am very much a free web software enthusiast but I also regard the openness and usability of a platform as paramount. In that respect, Gitorious is much too closed: it’s just a centralized hosting platform like Github, except that it runs free software – which we can’t even verify because it’s on a server we do not control. And it doesn’t have an integrated issue tracker which we really need, at the moment we have to use thebuggenie which is a serious pain in itself – in Github, issue management is way simpler. And Gitorious has downtimes, not just last week but it had many in the past. In comparison, I never had problems with Github – they can’t afford downtime. In addition, Github has lots more like automatic continuous integration through Travis-CI (http://travis-ci.org ) and other neat things useful for our future. Software freedom – and in this case the freedom of the software we use for development – is just a means, not an end. Our goal is the freedom of others, that of the people we make the software for. And that can be achieved best & fastest by using Github and by leveraging a vast range of enthusiastic developers & designers which are, as it is, mostly on Github.
