Obviously there's some flexibility in some of these devices. I haven't come
across one with eSATA.

But someone just raised with me the issue of SATA 1 (1.5Gbits/s) vs SATA 2
(3Gbits/s) - I see the Welland Turbo has SATA 2 compatibility but doesn't
mention the older standard. Do you know?

Wikipedia says 1.1 billion SATA drives were sold between 2001 and 2008, so
it's likely a few old ones are lurking in less progressive Australian
businesses.

I've got one (forget the brand but an image search for Wellard Turbo looks
much the same) but mine also does eSata. Awesome on older machines without
usb 3.0.

i have a bunch of 250Gb drives on my desk (seem so small now... I got a 3Tb
drive this week for $300 which is about what I paid for each of the 250Gb
drives! *sigh*)

Spot on Peter. That's exactly what I'm planning on using. The external docks
are very handy. (Also good when someone gives me an old hard drive they want
me to wipe for them).

I have a couple of Welland Turbo Leopard drive docking stations.

I have found these ideal for not only recovering data off of drives but also
an easy way to do backups.

I used one when my previous notebook took an early retirement. (Have since
brought it back out of retirement).

See http://www.welland.com.tw/html/USB3.0/USB3.0.html see ME-6015

You should be able to pick them up at any computer shop. Mine cost around
$75.

A USB 2.0 docking station is cheaper if you want that.

If you have another machine and the drive is SATA (2.5" or 3.5") you can
easily get access to the files on the drive provided the drive is not
cactus.

I am assuming that SSD drives are compatible.

The docking stations are USB 3.0 backwards compatible down to 1.1 and I have
a USB 3.0 express card for backups from my notebook.

I have a newish tower PC and it comes with USB 3.0 (plus USB 2.0)

I have another solution for older IDE drives but I doubt yours would an IDE
drive.

Regards Peter.

QUESTION:

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get this machine to reboot? I don't
mind reinstalling Windows as long as I can get to the files on the machine.
I have backups but that will be a painful road as I still need a machine to
be in a working state so that I can restore the backup.

I'd put your SSD in another machine (as a secondary, not boot disk) to get
the data off as a priority - then just call Dell or whoever to make them fix
it.
