Dear Allison
I was saddened to see your story on ozmidwifery especially in the
light of my recent twins waterbirth in one of our local hospitals
here in Sydney. The staff were so supportive and the couple and
myself are writing letters of praise + + + to the Director of Nursing
and clinical services as well as buying small gifts for the midwife
and doctor concerned.
I can only describe the admitting midwife's support to my clients and
myself as fantastic and I can't stop thanking her!
The IPM in your story seems not to know how to win friends and
influence people. does she? Perhaps she had never had to transfer
before? was exrtremely tired? had encountered previous hostility at
your hospital? Who knows what influenced her behaviour?
Perhaps you can become proactive and set the scene for future
encounters by providing some role modeling for this midwife.
Telephone her and offer to shout her a 'cuppa' in your hospital cafe.
You will then be able to debrief with her and perhaps pave the way
for more satisfying 'teamwork' in the event of future HB transfers.
I hope that you will still consider moving into the independent
sector yourself one day as it is an extremely satisfying way to
practise, even when the couple do not achieve all the goals within
their birth plans. The fact you have prepared couples for all
eventualities usually leeds to greater understanding and cooperation
when the venue has to be changed.
Perhaps you could offer to set up hospital tours for future couples
planning homebirth so that they feel more comforatable if transfer
occurs. Acceptance of their situation is greater when the couple have
been prepared for all possible outcomes and fully understand the
necessity for the management of each situation. It is a great
challenge and one I hope you will get involved with in the future.
I just hope that the IPM was not a member of ASIM, and if you find
out that she is not, please tell her to contact me with the view to
joining the Society. Of course, you are most welcome to join as well,
you don't have to be in independent practice, just supportive of the
concept of continuity of care.
