Dear Alison,

I feel sad that you were disappointed about the reactions of this couple in
the situation you described. Have you ever heard the word "gobsmacked"? This
word describes very well just how someone feels when they have been through
the ringer and have no idea sometimes what they are doing, let alone saying,
or not saying.  I feel sure that this couple, if they have any idea about
hospital possibilities, appreciated your care. I feel equally certain that
they were unable to express this at the time.

I have sometimes been in similar situations and had to ask myself why I felt
I needed acknowledgment from the people I cared for. I came to the conclusion
that it was because I knew they wouldn't necessarily have got what they
wanted with an alternate caregiver. I have also realised that the people
concerned would not always know this. I am, after all, "just doing my job". I
think Mary's suggestion of contacting the IPM is a really good one. You may
both benefit from this.

Keep up the good work.....Angela
