Just from one woman's experience. My blood group is A neg and I did not have anti-D in any of my pregnancies. As it turned out my first two children (sons) were both A neg like me. Their blood groups were tested from cord blood the day of their births. My daughter born in Sept is O pos and I was given anti D about 12 hrs after she was born. I was advised and had read that as long as the anti D is given within 24hrs of birth it still eliminated any antibodies formed. Although I do not plan on having any more children I was given it just incase I had an unexpected pregnancy.
