I am fascinated with this quote, and pissed off but unfortunately not surprised. Are we getting desensitised, well some are definitely. Anyway I am this week working on a chapter for my PhD thesis titled (so far) Women want to matter, or maybe Do women matter? anyway so far this is something I cant see in almost every interview I have done. My PhD is a feminist poststructuralsit analysis of what women tell me they worry about for childbirth. Women are aware consciously or subconsciously that they dont matter in a medicalised system of health care for the pregnancy and birth yet it is something they desire greatly. This is of course not overly easily articulated. I would love your permission Turd to use your quote in my thesis and if anyone else wants top give me some examples or quotes I will use them. It is a sad sad situation but I am not a pessimist we will eventually make change!

Subject: [ozmidwifery] obstetric language!

This is what I overheard an obstetrician say to a birthing woman recently, whilst applying a ventouse:

' stop screaming....it is all mind over matter...I don't mind and you don't matter'
if I had not heard it my self I would not have believed it ......
we had quite a heated discussion later outside the labour ward

with woman...and honoring of midwives
