Hey I was in no way supporting formula companies courting us with their
lunches etc. Totally on the same page.

It was just the generally accepted hyperbole about the "american birth
culture". I honestly don't think we can blame the USA for the "american way
of birth" being imported here. I think Australia has developed its own
uniquely australian way of medicalising birthing women and I think we were
well along the way to this way before the US culture became as dominant as
it has. I am well aware and schooled in Robbie Davis-Floyd's "American way
of birth" and was totally shocked and appalled when I first read it. True I
don't think we ever had anything like that in this country, at least I hope
not.

I also think there is much that is wonderful about the "american"
alternative birth culture that is often ignored but wonderfully highlighted
by Mary Murphy in her reference to Ina May Gaskin, Elizabeth Davis and
Midwifery Today. Thanks Mary.
