Pretty sure they'll still get the My SharePoint Sites folder, just no My Site.
We did exactly the same thing as you with regards to AD groups. Who the hell wouldn't?! To discover that we then needed to add users individually to the default site members group came as quite a shock. As for underlying structure on the members group, I really don't know. Clearly there may be something to it because individuals added to visitor or owner groups did not get the desired functionality. It can also take up to 24 hours for it to be push out to users.
