Batch-file-rename. It has a SharePoint scheme for illegal characters MOSS2007 doesn't support.

Couldn't give you an example off the top of my head but I know we used one here. Bear in mind that part of SharePoint's appeal is to remove the need for filenames to contain all relevant information about that file. I.E. you can use the Name/Title column for that and/or create your own custom fields. Doing that at mass-import time might be a little trickier though.
