Steam is the best online games distribution system around at the moment.
It certainly had a rocky start - a lot of people had dramas trying to
play Half Life 2 when it came out along with Steam.

Advertising and automatic updates come with the territory imo.

If Steam wouldn't work on their PCs then fair enough.
But in terms of annoying them - there's occasional steam client
auto-updates and the start-up news/special offers screen (which can be
turned off I think).
If that's all it takes to annoy your kids I feel sorry for you as a
parent - you must walk on eggshells around them!

And in terms of more fish - yeah there's heaps of other games publishers
around, but more and more of them are moving to Steam as a distribution
channel.
Overall Steam has been the single smartest thing Valve has done so far.

no principles involved. They were sick of Steam continually annoying
them. and being broken. And they moved on. It was that simple.

There are many more fish (games in this case, product suppliers in
general) in the sea.
