New key reader functions?

I notice on my Palm IIIx that the keypress reader has been significantly
improved. It is now possible to hold down buttons while pressing others, and
get a response in under half a second!

Can anyone tell me which version of the OS has this enhancement, so that I
can check for it in my start-up code, and only call my hacked key reader on
older machines?
