Have you looked at QuickBeam from Counterpoint?

Why not use IR and forget cradles -- just BEAM the data over IR!

I've been wondering if someone could get Counterpoint to make a
special version or QuickBeam ("AutoBeam"?) that would run in a sort
of "Kiosk" mode looking for devices to beam to... That is, just a
desktop system of some sort (could be a really tiny Windows box with
no display, keyboard, or mouse) with an IrDA transceiver. Walk up
and point your Palm at the kiosk, and it automagically beams some
pre-defined stuff to your device.

NOTE: QuickBeam does NOT work this way today (so far as I know).
The above is merely a suggestion for how it COULD work. It would be
really handy to be able to pick up a quick Doc file or a show
schedule or something like that...

Just a thought...
