Michael,

Their is an application that does just what you are talking about.  I
believe it is OmniRemote.  The app uses the IR port to control A/V IR
devices (TVs, VCRs, etc).  Since the IR port is not very strong, they built
stronger IR sender that clips on the bottom of one's Palm.  When using the
external IR device, one has to use their Palm upside-down - hence their need
for flipping the display.

You should be able to find the app at PilotGear, and then contact the
developers to see if they may be willing to share their "trade-secrets" with
you.  :-)
