Handheld Systems Programming was a very good mag that went out of print
last January that covered Palm development and before that Newton.
There was tons of articles and interesting hacks shown. The problem is
this medium you are reading my message through is killing technical
print journals.
Also, the sizes of databases and programs for Palm devices are so small,
they can quickly move around the net even with modem connections. In
fact, we are trying to figure out what to put on a CD-ROM to justify
using one instead of a floppy for shipping.
Nothing is more dated than data we use for development and updates and
changes are more easily read trough newsgroups and web pages. Plus, it
is more accessible. You get in front of your computer, connect to the
net and it is there. No more waiting for the mail dude or walking to a
store that has that issue on the shelf. This is one reason why the cost
of pulp paper has been increasing, the Internet is finally starting to
affecting the volume of all the city-block-sized printing houses in the
mid-west.
Magazine revenue models don't fit right with a web page site. A perfect
example is the identity crisis that Byte magazine has been going through
for the past two years and are still in the process of resolving.
