I worked for Motorola for a while; one of our projects was to port WinCE to
PowerPC. Amongst some minor things, I spent much of my time writing PCMCIA
driver, but I did see various portions of the internal code.
And while it's been a year or so, and I can't remember details of what I had
to deal with (thank goodness), I can definitely remember being very...
frightened? disgusted? amused? by the code I saw.
Of course, that's a different perspective than developing apps. One of
Microsoft's "plusses" on developing apps for WinCE was that you could take
your existing Win32 programs running in Win9x, and have it running on WinCE
with few changes. That was true, but only after you rewrote it with all
sorts of conditional compilation, different UIs, etc, etc, etc... Wasn't
fun.
PalmOS development has not been painless, but far from the torture that I
know as wince.
