I was already aware of the change with OS3.3 in the way Hacks and
their databases are listed separately in the Launcher, but I just
realized another change which strikes me as a more significant
step backwards.
The saved preferences for a hack are not deleted automatically when you
delete either the hack or its database (or both)! I suppose the
Launcher is only respecting deletion of databases of type 'appl' from
now on, eh? (This is also true in the OS3.5 test ROMs). Why was this
change made? And can we have it back the way it was before?
With this new behavior, there is no simple way for a hack (or shared
library, etc) to be cleanly removed by the end users. So we hack
writers are inadvertently going to be lumped in with the lame
programmers who feel obliged to clutter up people's Palms with orphaned
preferences. (oops, getting a bit opinionated, there.) I guess we
can advise people to use one of the 3rd party "Preference Editors"
if they do want to completely remove our hacks. Or else we need to
create a dummy application with the same creator to let someone do a
complete deletion. Neither are going to sound very clever to end
users.
Can we repectfully request a return to the old mechanism for the Launcher
in OS 3.5.1, so it will delete a hack's preferences?
(other hack writers feel free to vote too - or correct me if I'm missing an
obvious easy solution for Palm owners.)
Thanks,
Rick Bram
