The freeware HackBroom does the job nicely.

But the fact that the simple task of removing a hack from one's device 
requires yet another app is annoying, and confusing for customers. 
"Well, if your device is running OS 3.0 or below, you simply delete the 
hack. If it's 3.1, you have to.... If it's 3.3 or greater, you do.... 
And oh, by the way, here's how you tell which version of OS you have. 
Bring up the launcher (assuming you are using the built-in launcher and 
not a 3rd party launcher). If it looks like this, then.... Otherwise, 
tap Menu..." Ay ay ay!

I for one would like to see the old (OS 3.0 and earlier) behavior in 
3.5.1 (even though the damage has already been done, since there are 
plenty of devices in the field running 3.1 and 3.3, and I would hope 
there will soon be plenty running 3.5).
