The screen depth used for the launcher in PalmOS 3.5 is as follows: On Palm IIIc: 8 bits deep On all the grayscale devices: 1 bit deep This is also the default used for third party applications that don't explicitly set the screen depth. What all this means is that you won't normally see 2 or 4 bit deep icons in the launcher. For example, a Palm V, which is capable of displaying 16 shades of gray, will display the black and white icon. However, if a third party launcher is used (such as Silver Screen), these intermediate bit depth icons should be used. You really only need 1 bit and 8 bit deep icons to work well with the standard launcher.
