i had to add my 2c on this topic - but please listen to the points i
wish to make. the discussion of the "Zen of UNIX" and "non commercial"
development is total garbage. Linux *was* FREE, and totally open source,
developed by other UNIX-savvy people all over the world - but now? they
are commercial.. lets just look at the distributions.. RedHat, Debian
etc.. so much for "non commercial".
Michael: i have no objections to you developing prc-tools-0.6.0, but..
*i personally* dont mind John Marshall working on it, from within Palm.
you were "gone" for two months? John has always been around. now,
from a support standpoint, i think i would prefer knowing that there
is someone (at least one person) out there that is available from
Palm for support.
fine, you may have different design techniques and approaches -
but that does not mean you have the right to complain like you have
on this matter.
i will support John Marshall in this case - i have had no problems
with his version of gcc (albeit: i had to modify a few things)
since i installed it a while back. i dont have problems with
multiple segments, nor with having to add macro's everywhere.
the version i have is STABLE (and i have the source, so i can fix
things).. so it is still open-source.
Michael: i think your best bet (and this is some serious advice)
would be to team up with John Marshall - merge your ideas together
and release a great new version of the gcc tools. i am sure Palm
Computing would not have a problem adding one more person to their
salary batch processing - especially if it will help the development
community. i have forwarded this email to Cheri Leonard - maybe
she can get in contact with you directly.
if you got paid to do it, and work with John to bring together a
standard for gcc - would you do it?
(or would you be violating your Zen-of-UNIX rule?).
cheers.
az.
