I'm actually trying to do some programming on the RIM. A bit of a learning
curve for me, but the biggest problem I have so far is that their libraries
are not segregated properly. Such that they lumped a bunch of UI stuff
together with the low-level stuff; i.e. the messaging API is combined with
the email UI.
It is my understanding that they are moving to open-source for the core
applications sometime, but are reluctant to do so now because they don't want
people tinkering with the proprietary protocol stuff.. which obviously should
have been kept as a separate library from the stuff that people want to
change.
I love the pager for what it does, but you really have to start from scratch
if you are going to program it. And if you can't get the Blackberry model
you will probably be disappointed in the plain-old 950 software.. or lack
thereof. The go.web browser is spiffy though.
BTW, PalmOS on it would rock! Though I must admit that the Palm screen looks
gargantuan after I've stared at the RIM for a while, which is a weird brain
thing I guess. Maybe I should stare at my watch for a few hours to make the
RIM screen bigger.
