Also don't discount the cellular telephony technologies. Many of the
problems today are economic in nature. The big carriers don't see ways to
make money with wireless data yet that really opens the service up to folks
like us, especially in this country. The big carriers are also hard to work
with in vertical spaces I expect.
There are many technology solutions to current problems running in labs
today based on cellular telephone technology. For example battery life is
going to get better and better. CDMA has a dormant mode that allows you to
have a quiescent IP connection that only brings up the wireless data
channel when data is waiting on one end of the other and that solves the
wireless part of the push problem.
In terms of infrastructure build outs and economies of scale, the cellular
technologies dwarf just about any other technology it's possible we'll be
able to achieve much beter pricing. Even today the per-byte cost transfer
via Sprint PCS is something like a tenth of the Palm VII cost.
To answer Steve's point below:
- I don't want ads pushed to me
- I DO want stock alerts I configure on the server pushed to me
- I don't want random email messages and pages pushed to me
- I DO want filtered email pushed to me
Push (Wired screwed up that word; can we find a better one) with control on
the server is power to the people, no?
