I am a learned-by-the-seat-of-my-pants coder, and I need some help.
I've got an idea for a Palm application that will boost my husband's
income as well as simplify his life. I will tell you what little I've
got, then await your EXPERT opinions.
First, we will need to buy a Palm unit, and I'm currently leaning
toward the Palm IIIxe for its 8MB RAM. Much more functionality would
be unnecessary due to his limited on-the-job computer needs (he's an
artisan), but I welcome your opinions.
I've seen a Palm application built with Satellite Forms($$$), and was
told it was quite simple. But most of my on-line research recommends
CodeWarrior($) as the preferred development software. A co-worker said
he plans to use one of C/C++/VC++ for a Palm app he's got on the
drawing board. My languages are geared to ESRI-GIS (ESRI Geographic
Information Systems - AML, Avenue) as well as a pretty deep jump into a
VB 6.0 project. I do have Visual C++ at my disposal. At this point in
time, I have no plans to make the output printable, but I will want to
store his input for download to an analysis database on our WIN98 PC.
IF I could do this in VB, it would be no problem - except my spouse
would have to carry a laptop around instead of a Palm and his
environment is WAY too industrial for that. I don't expect to do any
further development (unless I get HOOKED!!), so I'd like to keep costs
as low as possible. Any and all information on OS version, Palm
series, software preferences, tips, tricks, warnings, adjunct needs
(compilers?)- ANYTHING - would be greatly appreciated.
Please advise me,
Your most humble newbie,
