The benefit is mainly that the device now knows the GMT time, which is
important for things like sending email or SMS messages. Of course, if you
don't do these things, it's of minor value, since it's pretty easy to
manually adjust the time by an hour. I also agree with you that a pulldown
isn't appropriate when there are only two options - it's silly. Lets just
say not everyone agrees with us ;-) If the utility you use to automatically
adjust for DST is coded to inform the OS of what it's doing (ie. it's
upgraded for OS 4.0), then the DST pulldown will automatically be updated to
reflect the new state. When you first boot a Palm, the Welcome app asks for
the time and time zone/DST info, and choosing a time zone doesn't affect the
current time. If you then later change the time zone, the current time is
adjusted accordingly. In other words, the Date & Time panel isn't designed
for initial setup of a device. I agree that having the device time updated
on HotSync would be nice, but that doesn't solve the time zone/DST problem
entirely: if you're travelling, you'll want to make time zone changes on the
device and have the time adjusted for you. A combination of time sync on
HotSync (for keeping device time accurate) and automatic DST with a reminder
would be very nice for many users.
