Maybe it's necessary for you, but bot for everyone else. The third party solution is fine for me b/c I don't need that feature.

Maybe you could put your app on the emulator and just use it from the desktop. Or you could consider writing a conduit that uses the PCs internet connection to sync necessary data. I remember there also
used to be ethernet cradles. I don't know if they still have them.

Not with the software bundled with the device, but they can using third-party software. Many people have had success using Softick PPP (http://www.softick.com/ppp/) with their Palm OS device.
