If I go into Preferences -> Connection in PalmOS v4.1 and I create a connection with Connect to: Local Network and Via: Cradle/Cable, what does this do? Can I connect to a PC network this way?
If you have an Ethernet cradle, then it is easy. Otherwise you need some serial or USB -to-PPP conversion software running on the PC. You can use RAS Server or get a license for Softick. Note Softick is shareware, so you can download a test copy and then license it after it works.
We have a number of users of our RF-TP Sync software using Softtick for this purpose (without HotSync being involved) and the user experience has been positive.
