Spot on. I had a missing write_cache for one of the repositories. Now it looks 
more reasonably:

real    0m9.444s

(a small note here. Since this option makes _huge_ difference, would it be 
worth adding few words to 
http://paludis.pioto.org/configuration/repositories.html? It seems it's 
mentioned only briefly in getting started and doesn't really reflect the 
impact it has on search times).

At the end of the day, we still have massive difference anyway. It's really 
dependent on use case scenario. For some actions eix is better for others 
inquisitio wins.

Would you consider adding checked/approved version of eix-update hook to 
http://git.pioto.org/gitweb/paludis-scripts.git?a=tree?
