The surface under the cardstock when it is being scored is also
important.
I can't get a good score on a hard surface.
Consequently, I use the cardboard back of a legal pad.
This allows the scoring tool to indent the cardstock.

I use a small, dull pocket knife for a scoring tool.
The knife blade was run over a sharpening stone at a perpendicular
angle to insure the blade being very dull.
