Why not? I'm also a Linux user and quite happy in designing paper models.
- - Create 3D-Meshes in Blender (www.blender.org)
- - Blender has tools for unfolding meshes: unfold and B-Paperizer
- - The results of unfolding are SVG-graphics which can be imported into
  inkscape (www.inkscape.org). There you can do vector-based texturing
  or you can export it into
- - gimp (www.gimp.org), a bitmap editor which is really great.

I did some projects with this software combination, and all worked well.
