I'm a little bit old(er) fashioned.....

I would opt for starting from the basics.
I mean really basics. Pen and paper and Scissors only.

Start designing easy models like Skyscrapers and houses, then move to complicated shapes like missles and airplanes.

This way you learn a lot about designing and you better know whats possible and get a better feeling which software suits you best.

The short list of ware for papermodelling is :
1. Imagination
2. Wetware
3. Software
4. Hardware

thats exactly what i was thinking. :D its the where to start that i've been struggling with. I have been using all of those tools for quite a while now. and so far that book looks fabulous. :D Im a huge fan of gimp. I have worked a little with inkscape, I may open up one of my simpler models and give it a shot with something thats already modeled.

Why not? I'm also a Linux user and quite happy in designing paper
    models.
    - - Create 3D-Meshes in Blender (www.blender.org
    <http://www.blender.org>)
    - - Blender has tools for unfolding meshes: unfold and B-Paperizer
    - - The results of unfolding are SVG-graphics which can be
    imported into
     inkscape (www.inkscape.org <http://www.inkscape.org>). There you
    can do vector-based texturing
or you can export it into
    - - gimp (www.gimp.org <http://www.gimp.org>), a bitmap editor
    which is really great.

I did some projects with this software combination, and all worked
    well.

This book is really great stuff. Have a lot of fun reading it.

    Best regards,
