Here's a Happy Telco Tale...
I'm a Burber too and recently installed an additional line into the house,
primarily dedicated for online use. On the first line I had been
happily connecting
at 53.333 w. my 56k USR Sportster, but with my new line (same hardware, etc.)
couldn't connect much higher than 28-30k.
I first suspected a "dirty connection" somewhere (inside or outside wiring),
and since I was paying $1.95/mo for 'inside wiring' maintenance w. telco,
tech came and found all wiring was in order.
I then explained my disappointment that the 'data' speed was half that
of the
other line--and though he said that telco only guarantees decent 'voice' connection--
he willingly proceeded to check out what the problem might be.
He went out to the pole, then down the road to another pole, then maybe down
to the Yellow Brick Pole, then came back and said that my new line was
on a
(secondary/extension) "block" (from Central?), while other line was on a (primary),
and that was the factor limiting my speed throughput; good wire, bad block,
what a bummer!
I asked if there was any way around this, and he said that if there was an
available spot on the primary block he could simply move my wire over...but
"standing room only" on that block...sorry Bub.
Then, his eyes lit up like a modem connected at cable speeds, and he said
he could swap over my two lines on the "blocks" so the new "data" line will
be on the primary, and the other "voice" line will be fine on the secondary,
and I could be happy happy!
And that I was, and telling this 'cause maybe this is a common, fixable
problem for bad connects in the burbs, and anyway it wouldn't hurt to
give a
"shout" to the telco...tell 'em Bub sent you ;-)
Good luck!
